Old Town
Old Town
The narrowest point of the AlUla Valley is where AlUla Old Town is located. The village is overlooked by the Musa bin Nusayr Castle, a fort that dates back to the 10th century and is built on a modest hill. Later, the area became an important stop on the pilgrimage route from Damascus to Makkah.
The dwellings were built to be connected to one another, offering defenses. 14 gates provided access to the city, which were opened in the morning to welcome travelers, pilgrims, and other guests, and closed each evening. There are 900 mudbrick dwellings in AlUla Old Town, 400 shops, and five town squares.
This fascinating complex has stone and mudbrick structures with twisting alleyways, windows glimpsing hidden lanes, and roof-top terraces that just hint at what lies underneath. AMSY had a role to play in the restoration of Alula’s Old Town Shops, booths, part of the electrical infrastructure, banisters, and supplied our “Illuminated Heritage Wood Pillars”, which are dark sky policy complaint, as the standard lighting option for the Old Town Main District.
